Me or the mirror

Me or the mirror

by Rachel Roberts 2014

Standing in front
Of my shimmery Reflection glaring
At it like a man does his enemy
Is that me or the mirror

Pushing my hair
Up this way and that
 Me or the mirror

Feeling hopeless
Despairing
I let it fall
Giving up on the war
I have lost

Then I try to see something good
About that girl
In the mirror but
I can’t

Stop that, a voice says
Your enough

But am I
Is the
Imperfection
Me or the mirror

Family is Important

Family is important
By Rachel Roberts

When I was just
A little girl
I was told
Family is important

When I was just
A little girl
I was told
We are all connected

Now that I’m older
I see why

Because I see mother
Rocking her baby
The chair going creek
Their hearts connected

I watch a father
Play with the little
Ones after a trying day
Of work
Their enjoyment shared

I run with a sibling
Dirtying my clothes
As I play
In the mud
Our excitement one

I watch a grandparent
Tell a story
Of hard work
Of diligence
Their eyes shining
Our wisdom merged

I see an aunt and uncle
Hugging a cousin
Wiping his teary eyes
  Their comfort linked

I eat with my
Family distant
And close we talk
And our burdens
Are lightened by our joint Strength

I know families
Are important
  Because trial, or sorrow,
Happiness, or Joy

A Secret Language

A SECRET LANGUAGE

 by Rachel Roberts

ONCE UPON A TIME
MY BROTHER AND ME
HAD A SECRET LANGUAGE

IT WAS A LANGUAGE ALL
OUR OWN
IF YOU WATCHED US
YOU WOULD THINK US
SILLY CHILDREN

BUT IF YOU WERE US
YOU WOULD SEE MAGICAL
WORLDS AROUND US

SO YOU SEE OUR LANGUAGE
WAS ONE MADE OF
ENGLISH, BUT THE WORDS
ALL TOGETHER WOULD MAKE
NO SENSE TO YOU
UNLESS YOU WERE US

SOME DAYS OUR LANGUAGE
TOLD A STORY ABOUT ME
A PRINCESS IN A FOREIGN
LAND AND HIM MY
BEST FRIEND

SOME DAYS IT WOULD BE
US SCALING MOUNTAIN TOPS,
THE ICY WINDS TOSSING
OUR HAIR THIS WAY
AND THAT

SOMEDAYS IT WAS
JUST US TALKING
BECAUSE HIM AND ME
HAD A SECRET LANGUAGE
ALL OUR OWN

BUT ONE DAY LANGUAGE
STARTED TO WAIN

WE STARTED TO CLIMB
DIFFERENT MOUNTAINS, LEADING
US TO SEPARATE LANDS
BUT THESE WERE IMAGINARY

WE BECAME LESS FRIENDS
AND MORE FOES
BECAUSE YOU SEE
THE LANGUAGE WAS LOST

ONE DAY I HOPE
TO FIND OUR LANGUAGE
AGAIN, BUT CHILDREN
NO LONGER ONLY
BEST FRIENDS

LOVE YOU MY BIG
BROTHER ADAM.
